OpenAI confirms GPT 5.6 as preferred model for Microsoft Copilot

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has stated that its latest GPT 5.6 model will be the preferred model running Microsoft's 365 Copilot. This confirmation follows reports earlier in the week indicating Microsoft was scaling back its use of OpenAI models to cut costs, opting for its own in-house solutions instead.

The announcement was made on Thursday, coinciding with OpenAI's launch of its new GPT 5.6 model family. In a blog post, the company stated that GPT 5.6 will support Microsoft users across its suite of productivity applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. "Our partnership with Microsoft has always been about bringing the benefits of advanced AI to more individuals and organizations, and we’re excited to continue building on that shared commitment," OpenAI wrote.

While the precise meaning of being a "preferred model" remains somewhat unclear, it signifies that OpenAI's technology will continue to be a core component powering Microsoft's applications. Previous reports suggested Microsoft's integration of its own models was primarily a cost-saving measure, rather than a signal of ending the partnership.

The statement aims to quell speculation about a potential cooling of the relationship between the two companies. Despite recently mixed signals from both parties regarding their collaboration, this latest move reaffirms OpenAI's continued significant role in Microsoft's AI strategy, particularly for Copilot services.
