OpenAI considers rebranding data centers as AI compute campuses

OpenAI is developing a strategic public relations plan following the U.S. midterm elections to shape the national and global discourse on artificial intelligence. According to Chris Lehane, the company’s chief global affairs officer, the firm aims to address the growing political scrutiny surrounding AI development and infrastructure as the industry approaches the 2028 presidential cycle.

As part of this effort, the company is considering a rebranding of its data center facilities to “AI compute campuses.” This pivot aims to address public and local opposition regarding the environmental and infrastructure impact of large-scale AI server farms. By shifting the terminology, the company intends to frame these sites as assets that provide transformative local benefits.

Lehane defended the current public debate, noting that communities should hold tech companies accountable for their projects. Beyond the branding shift, OpenAI intends to advocate for global AI standards and the implementation of “speed limits” for frontier model development.
