AI research company OpenAI announced on July 31st a substantial reduction in usage fees for its GPT-5.6 model series, specifically targeting GPT-5.6 Luna with an 80% price cut. The adjustments come approximately three weeks after the series' initial launch on July 9th.

The GPT-5.6 Terra model will see a 20% decrease in costs. Input for one million tokens will now cost $2, down from $2.5, while output for the same volume drops from $15 to $12.

For the GPT-5.6 Luna model, the price drop is more pronounced. Input costs per million tokens are reduced from $1 to $0.2, and output costs fall from $6 to $1.2. OpenAI stated these reductions align with its core mission to make advanced artificial intelligence accessible and ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.

The company also presented performance data comparing GPT-5.6 Luna to DeepSeek V4 Pro. According to their analysis, the Luna model offers advanced intelligent capabilities at a lower cost per completed task, positioning it favorably in terms of cost-effectiveness for users.
