OpenAI cuts GPT-5.6 model prices by up to 80% amid competition

OpenAI has announced substantial price reductions for two models within its GPT-5.6 series, a move signaling increased competition in the artificial intelligence market. The GPT-5.6 Luna model, the smallest and fastest in the lineup, will see its price slashed by 80%, while the mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model will be reduced by 20%.

These price adjustments place Luna closer to the pricing of lower-cost commercial models available in the market. The changes follow recent price adjustments and new model releases from competitors such as Anthropic and Google. OpenAI is also introducing a premium "Fast mode" for its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model, offering increased throughput.

The new pricing for GPT-5.6 Luna is set at $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, totaling $1.40 per million tokens. GPT-5.6 Terra will now cost $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens, amounting to $14 per million tokens.

Sol Standard pricing remains unchanged. However, the new Sol Fast mode will double the cost, priced at $10 per million input tokens and $60 per million output tokens. OpenAI states that this Fast mode can deliver up to 2.5 times the throughput without altering the model's core intelligence.

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the changes on social media as "major price cuts." The strategic repricing aims to make OpenAI's offerings more competitive across different market segments, particularly in the high-throughput, lower-latency application space with the Luna model.
