OpenAI Delays Astra Model Release Due to Cybersecurity Risks
AI company OpenAI has postponed the launch of its upcoming Astra model, citing significant cybersecurity risks. The model has been classified as 'critical' under OpenAI's preparedness framework.

OpenAI has announced a delay in the release of its upcoming model, Astra, due to identified cybersecurity risks. The company stated that internal assessments and expert evaluations indicate Astra represents a significant breakthrough in both agent programming and cybersecurity.
Astra has been classified as OpenAI's first model to reach a 'critical' risk level for cybersecurity, according to its Preparedness Framework. This classification is triggered by capabilities such as identifying and exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in secure systems without human intervention, or independently devising and executing end-to-end cyberattacks based on high-level strategic goals.
OpenAI emphasized that Astra was not involved in previous cyberattacks targeting Hugging Face. To ensure secure development and deployment, the company has implemented enhanced control measures. These include stricter security controls for high-capability models, isolated testing environments, restricted network and tool access, reinforced model weight protection and encryption, and additional monitoring and detection capabilities.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman commented that Astra is a powerful model they are working hard to release. He stressed, however, that its advanced cybersecurity capabilities require more time to ensure they can be managed safely. Altman stated that limiting top models to a few individuals is not an optimal strategy and expressed hope for a swift release.
