OpenAI has partnered with PerturbAI and Scripps Research to test a distributed AI framework capable of analyzing CRISPR-based biological data. By employing thousands of AI agents powered by a specialized model dubbed GPT-Rosalind, the team completed the analysis of millions of mouse brain cells in 32 minutes—a timeframe that researchers estimate would take humans several months to over a year to complete.

The system functions by partitioning gene intervention analysis across multiple agents, which simultaneously process cell reaction data and cross-reference existing scientific literature. The findings are synthesized into a "Reasoning Atlas," a mapping tool that links specific gene changes to potential biological mechanisms. Notably, the AI identified novel potential links between gene expression and neurodegenerative conditions that warrant further experimental validation.

The study, posted to the bioRxiv preprint server on October 16, remains subject to peer review. Researchers involved in the project emphasize that the findings are currently preliminary hypotheses. The team has released the analysis flow and code to the public to assist researchers in prioritizing biological experiments.
