OpenAI Developing Humanoid Robots, Focusing on AI "Brain"
AI firm OpenAI is developing humanoid robots, with CEO Sam Altman stating the core focus is creating the AI 'brain' to control them.
AI company OpenAI has initiated a development project for humanoid robots, confirmed CEO Sam Altman. The company aims to create robots where advanced AI control is the central feature. Altman justifies the choice of a human-like form by stating the world is designed for humans, making a similarly sized and shaped robot the most efficient for operating in human-created environments.
According to Altman, the robots' appearance is less critical than their ability to function autonomously. Developing the "brain for real robots" is the priority. Without the capability to effectively control its limbs, a robot would be of limited use, regardless of its physical form. The company anticipates showcasing a first prototype in 2027, but widespread deployment is still several years away. OpenAI is actively recruiting talent across various robotics disciplines, including motion control, sensor data interpretation, and machine learning infrastructure development.
OpenAI's prior research, such as the Dactyl project, has demonstrated the ability to teach robots complex physical tasks within simulation environments. While the technology can simulate actions, the challenges of real-world physics still require solutions.
The company is also developing the robots' own mechanical components, such as electric motors and sensors, and investing in manufacturing processes and supply chains. The goal is to initially create general-purpose robots for infrastructure construction, followed by personal robots for more diverse tasks.
