OpenAI Discovers Alleged Spy Device, Highlights Physical Security Risks
OpenAI reported finding a sophisticated recording device at its offices. The incident serves as a reminder of traditional surveillance threats in the digital age.

Artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has announced the discovery of a sophisticated recording device within its offices. The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that an OpenAI engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, planted the device in the company's executive conference room.
Alfozan, a Saudi national who also advised government agencies in his home country, was charged with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications. OpenAI utilized its own AI models to identify the device and the employee responsible for planting it, subsequently referring the matter to the FBI. The investigation is ongoing.
The device, described as a thumbdrive-sized audio recorder, was allegedly plugged into a USB port on a television in the conference room. This discovery highlights how conventional surveillance methods can still pose significant security risks, even for leading technology companies.
The incident underscores the need for comprehensive security audits that include both digital and physical aspects of office environments. Companies are reminded to remain vigilant against both cyber threats and older forms of espionage.
