OpenAI Employees Publicly Support CEO Altman Amid Criticism
Multiple OpenAI employees have spoken out in defense of CEO Sam Altman, asserting he is receptive to dissenting opinions rather than dismissive of criticism.

Several employees at OpenAI have publicly defended CEO Sam Altman, countering claims that he is unreceptive to criticism. They state that Altman is open to disagreements and willing to listen to different viewpoints.
For instance, Eric Mitchell, co-lead of OpenAI's frontier model alignment team, shared that he had directly challenged Altman multiple times and voiced dissatisfaction with management. Mitchell described Altman as approaching each objection, complaint, or correction with curiosity and openness, sometimes even conceding points.
The employees' statements emerged in response to, and in contradiction of, information suggesting a punitive culture for criticizing leadership. Mitchell specifically refuted the notion of retaliation for honest feedback, stating it does not align with his experience.
Former employees have also corroborated this view. Gabriel Petrovsky, a researcher who later founded his own company, confirmed, "Sam is indeed very receptive to opinions." Deap, who departed OpenAI in April, commented on the company's "unusual tolerance for internal dissent and criticism."
This defense comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Altman's leadership style, particularly following his brief ouster and swift return as CEO in 2023. At that time, the OpenAI board cited Altman's lack of transparency in communication. Despite the focus on AI and automation, employees within OpenAI have described the company culture as surprisingly human.
