OpenAI Engineer Accused of Using AI to Plan Recording Device Installation

An engineer at OpenAI has been accused by federal prosecutors of using artificial intelligence tools and internal company systems to plan the installation of a covert audio recording device within an executive conference room. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, allegedly employed AI chatbots and internal tools to research meeting schedules and devise a method for planting the device, which prosecutors claim was hidden in toilet paper and placed behind a monitor.

Alfozan, who joined OpenAI in July 2023, reportedly used his company credentials to access meeting room information and inquired about setting up covert recording equipment via a spouse's chatbot account. The device, identified as a sophisticated, thumb-sized board with a microphone and storage, was discovered by OpenAI's security team on September 30 during a counter-surveillance sweep.

OpenAI stated that it has no indications that Alfozan accessed proprietary information such as model weights, source code, or customer data. The company stated it takes protecting its technology and data seriously. Alfozan was fired on the Friday preceding his arrest and initial court appearance on Tuesday.

FBI Director Kash Patel indicated the goal was to capture sensitive communications about the company's "super intelligence technology," though a motive has not been publicly detailed. If convicted of using an electronic device to intercept oral communications, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison. He could not be immediately reached for comment.
