The U.S. Department of Justice announced the arrest of Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old engineer at OpenAI, on charges of illegal interception of oral communications. Alfozan, a Saudi national, was taken into custody on October 9 in San Francisco.

Alfozan, who has been employed by OpenAI since July 2025, faces a potential sentence of up to five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine if found guilty. Prosecutors allege that he installed a clandestine recording device within an executive meeting room at OpenAI's offices. This room is reportedly used for discussions involving proprietary research, product plans, and business strategies.

OpenAI's security personnel discovered the device on September 30, concealed in a toilet paper roll behind a television in the executive conference room. The device contained encrypted data. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Alfozan near the room multiple times, though he was not authorized to attend meetings held there.

Prosecutors further allege that Alfozan used company productivity tools to search for office layouts and executive schedules. Additionally, a chatbot account associated with Alfozan reportedly made inquiries related to continuous recording and real-time listening. OpenAI has since terminated Alfozan's employment and stated that there is currently no indication of improper access to or exfiltration of model weights, source code, or customer data.
