OpenAI Engineer Arrested Over Alleged Sophisticated Listening Device

An engineer at OpenAI has been arrested and charged with allegedly installing a sophisticated recording device inside a company conference room. Officials stated the alleged motive was to capture sensitive conversations concerning the company's technology.

The employee, identified as 35-year-old Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested on Friday. This followed the discovery of an audio recording device hidden within a company conference room the previous week, according to a federal court complaint.

OpenAI confirmed the discovery of a "sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices." The company reported the finding to the FBI and subsequently terminated the employee's employment.

"At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated," an OpenAI spokesperson stated. The complaint alleges Alfozan used an electronic device to intercept oral communications. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 19.
