OpenAI Executive Fidji Simo Steps Down Due to Chronic Illness

Fidji Simo, who led product and business development at OpenAI, announced on Thursday that she is stepping down from her role. The decision comes as she needs to focus on recovering from a "severe exacerbation of a chronic illness."

Simo, who previously served as CEO of Instacart, joined OpenAI in May of last year. She had been on medical leave from the artificial intelligence company since April. Simo shared her decision via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that she was making this choice to prioritize her health.

She was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) in 2019. During her absence, OpenAI President Greg Brockman assumed responsibility for product oversight. Simo's departure marks a significant transition for the AI research firm.

Following her transition, Simo will continue to contribute to OpenAI in a part-time advisor capacity. The company has not yet announced a permanent successor for her executive role.
