OpenAI Head of Safety Systems Johannes Heidecke Departing
Johannes Heidecke, head of safety systems at OpenAI, has announced his departure from the company. The move follows recent organizational changes aimed at integrating research and safety teams.

Johannes Heidecke, who led safety systems at OpenAI, has informed staff this week that he will be leaving the company. This personnel change occurs amidst OpenAI's organizational restructuring, which aims to further integrate the company's research and safety teams.
According to an internal memo, OpenAI's chief research officer Mark Chen stated that the safety team will now report to Mia Glaese, vice president of research. Glaese will also assume the role of vice president of research and safety.
Heidecke joined OpenAI in 2021 as an AI safety analyst. He took over the position of head of safety systems in 2024, following the departure of former head Lilian Weng.
The company's reorganization appears to be an effort to streamline its approach to AI safety and development as the field rapidly evolves.
