OpenAI Infrastructure Lead Sachin Katti to Transition to Advisor Role

Sachin Katti, OpenAI's head of infrastructure and compute, announced on Wednesday that he is stepping down from his position after approximately one year with the artificial intelligence company. Katti stated on LinkedIn that he has "decided to move on to build something new" and will continue to advise OpenAI after his departure on November 15.

Uday Ruddarraju, currently OpenAI's CTO of compute, is set to replace Katti and assume leadership of the company's overall compute organization, according to a company spokesperson. Ruddarraju joined OpenAI last July and previously led infrastructure engineering at Elon Musk's xAI.

OpenAI's compute organization plays a critical role in its strategy, responsible for developing the company's infrastructure roadmap and ensuring the capacity to train and serve its AI models. The company has ambitious plans, targeting approximately $600 billion in total compute spend by 2030 and is engaged in significant, multi-billion dollar data center projects across the United States.

The leadership change occurs amidst growing concerns and public backlash regarding AI data centers in the U.S., focusing on issues such as noise, energy consumption, and water usage. These concerns have become a notable political issue in the lead-up to the upcoming midterm elections.

Katti expressed confidence in Ruddarraju and the team to continue the work, stating his identity as a "builder at heart" and anticipation for new ventures. This departure follows other executive shifts at OpenAI this year, including product chief Fidji Simo and former executive Brad Lightcap.
