OpenAI Introduces Ads in ChatGPT Conversations in India
OpenAI has launched ads within its ChatGPT AI chatbot in India. The new feature displays sponsored messages at the end of conversations, extending advertising reach into AI tools.

OpenAI has introduced advertising within its ChatGPT AI service in India, marking the first time sponsored messages will appear directly within user conversations.
This move signifies a notable shift in digital advertising, as ad inventory expands from traditional search engines and social media platforms to conversational AI applications. OpenAI states that over 50 brands are participating in the initial rollout, with agency partners including WPP and Omnicom.
The ads will be visible to users on the Free and Go tiers, while paid subscriptions like Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education will offer an ad-free experience. Businesses can utilize ChatGPT's self-serve Ads Manager, with daily budgets starting at ₹725 in India.
OpenAI's rationale for the new ad model centers on the increasing trend of users seeking information and making purchasing decisions through ChatGPT rather than traditional search engines. The conversational format provides advertisers with rich context regarding user needs, budgets, and preferences, enabling the delivery of more targeted advertisements.
The new model aims to blend the benefits of search advertising with the context derived from conversations. Ads will be clearly labeled as sponsored messages and visually separated from ChatGPT's responses. OpenAI assures that ads do not influence the AI's generated answers, and advertisers will not access user conversations or personal data. Initially, ads will be excluded from sensitive or regulated topics such as mental health and politics, as well as from users identified as minors.
