Millions of ChatGPT users in India will soon encounter advertisements within their chat interactions as OpenAI, the U.S.-based artificial intelligence company, extends its newly introduced advertising features to a major market. This expansion follows a six-month testing period for ads in the United States.

The advertising will be visible to users on ChatGPT's free and Go tiers, while subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will remain ad-free. OpenAI has stated that ads will be clearly labeled and placed at the bottom of responses, and will not influence the AI's generated content. The company also indicated that advertisements will be excluded from sensitive topics such as mental health and politics to preserve user trust.

The strategic shift is likely driven by the substantial costs associated with developing and operating large language models (LLMs). While many users have accessed AI services without charge, the large-scale deployment of these models incurs significant operational expenses. Increasing pressure from investors for profitability is prompting companies to explore new revenue streams, with advertising emerging as a primary option.

Drawing parallels with previous technology platforms like social media and search engines, which have leveraged user data for targeted advertising, AI chatbots present an opportunity for even deeper and more intimate user insights. This raises significant questions regarding the protection of user privacy and trust moving forward, particularly in emerging markets like India where digital literacy levels may vary.
