OpenAI has announced the launch of Astra for Law, a specialized artificial intelligence platform aimed at the legal sector. The service features a legal search index covering over 230 million URLs and incorporates the CourtListener case library, which includes more than 99.9% of published U.S. case law.

In testing using 200 U.S. legal research questions, Astra for Law achieved an overall accuracy rate of 54.0%. This compares to 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra utilizing only web search. The platform demonstrated improvements in case law identification, finding 24% more relevant case references and increasing the retrieval of pertinent text passages from correct judicial opinions by up to 54%.

OpenAI clarifies that Astra for Law is not intended to function as an "AI lawyer." Instead, it serves as a tool for lawyers and legal software companies. Its capabilities are geared towards differentiating core judicial reasoning from collateral comments in rulings, identifying adverse precedents, and analyzing contractual risk allocation.

The introduction of Astra for Law aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of legal research, potentially improving case outcomes by providing legal professionals with more robust analytical tools.
