OpenAI launches autonomous AI agents called Dots

OpenAI has introduced "dots," new AI agents powered by GPT-6 Astra that can perform tasks independently without continuous user prompts. These agents operate in the cloud and continue tasks autonomously.

1 October 2026

At DevDay 2026, OpenAI unveiled "dots," a new generation of autonomous AI agents driven by its GPT-6 Astra model. These agents are designed to operate independently in the cloud, continuing tasks without requiring constant user input.

The "dots" agents are initially rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Enterprise, Education, and Healthcare workspaces will have access to a beta version, which administrators can enable. The first "dot" is included at no extra charge.

These agents are capable of a wide range of functions, such as monitoring customer feedback, testing minor fixes, and submitting code changes with video documentation. They can also assist in sales by revising proposals, updating test plans, and building proof-of-concept integrations. For content creation, a "dot" can convert interview transcripts into video clips, show notes, and draft social media posts.

OpenAI highlighted safety features, including the isolation of the agent's cloud environment from user systems and user control over app permissions and actions. Users can monitor agent progress and set up approval rules. The company is also piloting specialist "dots" for organizations, designed to take on specific roles within a company.
