OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens with Enhanced Safety Features
OpenAI has released a version of its ChatGPT chatbot specifically designed for users under 18, incorporating stronger safety measures and parental controls. The new "Teens Table" aims to mitigate exposure to inappropriate content.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens on Tuesday, introducing enhanced safety protections and features designed to promote healthy usage, alongside additional controls for parents. The company stated that users estimated to be under 18, or those who self-identify as between 13 and 17, will be automatically directed to this version.
The underlying model for the teen chatbot includes age-appropriate safeguards to reduce exposure to content deemed harmful or developmentally inappropriate. The system is designed to intervene in conversations touching upon sensitive topics like self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit sexual or graphic content. OpenAI reports these protections are informed by developmental science and expert guidance.
Recent updates also include prompts to discourage prolonged use and warnings against uploading private or sensitive images. Parents can utilize linked accounts to set "Quiet Hours," manage settings, and receive safety notifications in specific high-risk scenarios.
Additionally, the teen version offers new learning features, such as a "Study Mode" providing guided questions and step-by-step support. It is programmed to detect attempts to circumvent assignments and redirect users back to study modules. Quizzes and learning visualizations are also available to aid in practice and knowledge testing. Parents have control over the default active hours for Study Mode.
