OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Mode for Teens with Stricter Safeguards
OpenAI has introduced a dedicated ChatGPT mode for teenagers, featuring enhanced restrictions on harmful content and new study tools. The move aims to address safety concerns regarding AI use by minors.

OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT mode for users aged 13 to 17, implementing stricter limitations on harmful content, including graphic violence, self-harm, and sexual roleplay.
The teen mode is designed with "age-appropriate safeguards" to reduce exposure to potentially harmful or developmentally inappropriate material. The system will remind younger users to take breaks after 90 minutes of activity within a three-hour window. OpenAI has also strengthened protections against the chatbot expressing personal feelings and will alert users if sensitive images are uploaded.
Features for teens include a "Study Mode" to assist with assignments and learning, responsible homework reminders, and "Study Hours" for setting default usage periods. The company employs behavioral signals, such as usage times, prompt phrasing, and handwriting analysis, to estimate user age, defaulting to an under-18 setting if age cannot be determined.
This launch occurs amidst growing concerns about AI safety for minors globally. OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT exacerbates mental health crises and incites violence. A recent case involved a 17-year-old charged with murder, who allegedly used ChatGPT to research killing his family.
While the new teen mode aims to enhance safety, broader challenges persist regarding the effective age verification for AI platforms and the potential for misuse. India is also considering graded age-based restrictions for social media platforms.
