OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work, an AI Agent for Task Management

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work on Thursday, a new AI agent embedded within its flagship chatbot. The product aims to shift ChatGPT from a question-and-answer tool into an autonomous work platform capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks across users' email, calendars, code repositories, and messaging apps.

Powered by OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model, ChatGPT Work can gather context from connected applications and files to produce finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites. The agent takes a stated outcome, breaks it into smaller steps, and works independently on complex projects for hours.

The launch represents OpenAI's clearest effort yet to reposition ChatGPT as a workplace platform rather than a chatbot. Last month, the company confidentially submitted a draft S-1 registration statement to the SEC, teeing up a potential major technology IPO.

The core architecture features a persistent, cloud-based virtual machine running on OpenAI's servers, ensuring availability across devices. This contrasts with competitors whose agents require a local machine to remain powered on. ChatGPT Work is rolling out to paid users, beginning with Pro, Enterprise, and Edu tiers, and will expand to Plus and Business users.
