OpenAI Plans $750 Billion Infrastructure Spend Through 2030
AI company OpenAI announced plans to spend $750 billion on infrastructure by 2030, a substantial increase over previous estimates and a significant ramp-up in computing power acquisition.
OpenAI announced Wednesday it plans to spend $750 billion on infrastructure through 2030, approximately 25% more than estimated earlier this year, according to the Wall Street Journal. This renewed spending spree comes as the company continues to scale its AI development and operational capabilities.
The initial phase of this investment includes a $20 billion data center campus in Georgia, dubbed Project Camellia. This development will span 1,400 acres northwest of Savannah and will require a significant power draw. Georgia Power is set to provide at least 3.2 gigawatts of power between 2028 and 2032 to support the facility.
OpenAI will cover the majority of the infrastructure and electricity service costs for Project Camellia. However, Georgia has implemented a rule preventing utilities from passing on costs associated with new users drawing more than 100 megawatts directly to consumers. Additionally, OpenAI has agreed to reduce its power demand by up to 1 gigawatt during periods of high grid demand.
The project is receiving substantial tax incentives from Effingham County, including a 50% property tax abatement for 15 years. Specifics regarding the project's energy sources or the use of renewable energy have not yet been disclosed.
