AI research company OpenAI has revealed ambitious plans for the future of voice assistants, with president Greg Brockmann detailing how current ChatGPT voice capabilities will evolve. The company aims to deeply integrate these advanced voice features into various hardware, not limiting them to OpenAI's own devices. Future support is planned for third-party smart glasses and other wearable products.
OpenAI demonstrated its recently upgraded ChatGPT Live voice interface, which allows for more natural, simultaneous speaking, listening, and responding to user interruptions. The company's broader objective is to build a voice assistant akin to "J.A.R.V.I.S.", the AI companion from Marvel's Iron Man.
Brockmann stated that OpenAI's Codex technology is already capable of controlling an entire computer. While ChatGPT Live is currently bound to Codex, he indicated this is not a permanent necessity, and Codex's capabilities are growing significantly. He posited that traditional human-computer interaction methods like clicking and typing are merely a phase in the evolution of interaction.
The company emphasizes the importance of integration with other devices and services, viewing its API as a key application. The goal is to establish a unified interface for the voice assistant, making it accessible across all devices. Brockmann mentioned that the API is still in its early stages.
