AI firm OpenAI is planning a significant investment of up to $20 billion to construct a massive new data center in the vicinity of Savannah, Georgia. This project is expected to substantially enhance the company's computational capabilities.
The company has secured an agreement with Georgia Power for 3.2 gigawatts of energy supply for the planned data center campus in Effingham County. Initial power, reaching several hundred megawatts, is anticipated to be operational from 2028, with construction continuing through 2032. If the facility reaches its full 3.2-gigawatt capacity, the total cost could exceed $30 billion, according to OpenAI's Vice President of Computing Strategy, Sachin Katti.
OpenAI has committed to investing $20 billion in the county to qualify for an incentive package, which is scheduled for a vote this week. These substantial investments are crucial for supporting the growing demands of developing and operating advanced AI models.
