OpenAI Pushes Back on Apple Trade Secret Lawsuit

OpenAI has responded to Apple's lawsuit alleging theft of trade secrets by stating the complaint is without merit. The AI research lab asserted that while the allegations are taken seriously, there is no evidence to support them.

Apple filed a lawsuit Friday, accusing OpenAI and its employees of a coordinated effort to obtain confidential information and intellectual property. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, specifically names former Apple executive Tang Tan, now OpenAI's chief hardware officer, as central to the alleged misappropriation.

In its statement, OpenAI emphasized its belief in fair competition and employee freedom, stating, "We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere." This marks the first direct comment from OpenAI on the lawsuit's substance.

Apple claims its investigation uncovered evidence that OpenAI has used its confidential information in developing its own hardware. Reports suggest OpenAI is working on a competing device, possibly a smart speaker, following its acquisition of Jony Ive's startup io, which could directly challenge Apple's business.
