OpenAI releases Images 2.6 with GIF support and 50% faster generation
OpenAI has deployed Images 2.6 globally, introducing GIF generation, faster processing speeds, and granular editing controls for API users.

OpenAI rolled out its Images 2.6 update on November 4, extending new capabilities to users of ChatGPT, Codex, and its API. The release introduces native GIF generation and expanded editing features, aiming to refine user control over AI-generated visual content.
The update adds the GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst models to the API suite. The Flare model is specifically designed for efficiency, capable of generating images in as little as six seconds when set to lower quality. Additionally, the release integrates scalable vector graphics (SVG) exports and a new complexity parameter that allows developers to manage the model's planning intensity.
OpenAI reports that generation speeds have increased by 50% over the previous iteration. With approximately 4 billion images currently produced across its platforms each week, the company is focusing on performance gains and infrastructure stability. While documentation for the new API tools is available, the company has not yet confirmed specific pricing updates or new content provenance standards.
