OpenAI reportedly developing screenless smart speaker
OpenAI is reportedly working on its first consumer device, a portable, screenless smart speaker. The device is expected to challenge existing smart speaker offerings from Apple and Amazon.

AI research company OpenAI is developing its first consumer hardware device, reportedly a portable, screenless smart speaker. According to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday, the device aims to function as a personal assistant that learns user habits and utilizes personal information, such as emails, to offer proactive assistance. The device is expected to manage connected appliances, handle messaging, and play media, operating via OpenAI's new voice technology, GPT-Live. Its mobility is enhanced by a rechargeable battery and separate, independently moving components designed to make the device appear more lifelike. Behind the device are OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive. OpenAI acquired Ive's hardware startup, io Products, last year, integrating its design team. Ive's studio, LoveFrom, retains creative responsibility for OpenAI's hardware. The device is seen as a direct challenge to established players like Apple and Amazon. By pursuing its own hardware, OpenAI aims to reduce its reliance on devices controlled by Apple, Google, and Microsoft, through which most ChatGPT users currently access the service. This strategic move would grant OpenAI greater control over its technology and the user experience.
