OpenAI Reportedly Plans to Revive Sora as Professional Film Tool

OpenAI is reportedly in talks to transfer its discontinued Sora video generation model to a startup focused on filmmaking tools. The move aims to repurpose Sora for professional cinematic production.

Artificial intelligence research firm OpenAI is reportedly in discussions to transfer its suspended Sora video generation model to a startup specializing in AI-driven film production technology. The startup aims to re-enter the market by developing Sora into a professional tool for the movie industry.

According to reports, the unnamed startup was founded by figures including Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, former Sora research lead Bill Peebles, and former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa. The proposed collaboration would involve the startup taking over and adapting the Sora platform to create software or services for filmmakers.

The terms of the potential deal are still under negotiation, and it remains unclear whether the startup will gain access to Sora's model weights. OpenAI previously halted development on Sora and consumer-facing video applications earlier this year as part of a strategic shift towards enterprise AI and coding tools.

This move follows OpenAI's decision to cut back on high-compute, non-core projects. The company had previously discontinued its consumer-facing Sora app and reportedly ended a significant partnership plan with Disney.
