OpenAI Revenue Reportedly $20 Billion Below Projections

Artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has reportedly revised its projected annualized revenue downwards, informing investors that the figure is now approaching $50 billion. This represents a significant decrease from earlier estimates, which placed the company's annualized revenue closer to $70 billion.

The Financial Times reported that OpenAI shared these updated figures with investors, indicating a $20 billion shortfall compared to prior projections. The earlier $70 billion figure, widely circulated, was reportedly an attempt by OpenAI's investors to draw comparisons with competitor Anthropic's reported revenue run rate. The discrepancy is partly attributed to differing methodologies in calculating annualized revenue between the two companies.

This downward revision comes at a time when OpenAI is seeking to justify substantial investments. The company secured $122 billion in funding during a March round alone. Leaked financial documents earlier this year indicated that while OpenAI generated approximately $13 billion in revenue, its expenses were significantly higher, raising questions about its path to profitability.

OpenAI's previously anticipated initial public offering (IPO), rumored for this year, has reportedly been postponed to early 2027. The adjusted revenue figures may influence the company's valuation and the eventual timing and terms of its IPO, while also providing a clearer picture of its financial standing in the competitive AI landscape.
