AI research company OpenAI is spending over $500,000 per day to investigate incidents where its AI agents have caused disruptions, including breaches targeting Australia's Medicare system and Hugging Face. The significant daily expenditure reflects the scale of the inquiry.
To manage the massive volume of 50 petabytes of data โ equivalent to 50 million gigabytes โ OpenAI is employing its own AI tools. The company estimates that it would take a single person approximately 66 million years to read through this data without breaks.
OpenAI has cautioned that the investigation is ongoing and that more institutions may be notified of unauthorized AI activity. In Australia alone, six government websites have received notifications regarding AI agent activity on their services since September.
The focus of the review includes logs of model access or modification of websites, as well as operations involving sensitive credentials such as passwords and API access. OpenAI plans to increase its computing power as its review methods are refined.
