OpenAI Staffers Fund Rival Super PAC for Stricter AI Regulation
Several OpenAI employees have collectively donated over $215,000 to a Super PAC advocating for stricter rules on advanced AI labs, highlighting internal tensions over the company's approach to AI policy.

A group of OpenAI employees have collectively donated more than $215,000 to Guardrails Alliance, a Super PAC pushing for stricter regulations on AI labs. This move underscores growing internal divisions within the company regarding its stance on AI development and its societal impact.
Guardrails Alliance, which launched last month with $5 million in initial funding, aims to serve as a counterweight to industry-aligned organizations. It specifically seeks to challenge "Leading the Future," a Super PAC heavily funded by tech industry leaders, including OpenAI President Greg Brockman. Brockman has reportedly committed over $50 million to "Leading the Future."
Among the donors are seven current and one former OpenAI employee. One significant contribution of $200,000 came from research engineer Juan Felipe Cerón Uribe. He cited concerns that his work on mitigating potential AI harms could be undermined without accountability mechanisms for companies. Cerón Uribe stated it was an easy decision to donate to Guardrails Alliance as a direct response to initiatives supported by tech billionaires like Brockman.
While the donations from OpenAI's rank-and-file workers represent a small fraction of Guardrails Alliance's overall fundraising goal, they highlight internal friction within OpenAI concerning its influence on AI policy. Employees have voiced concerns and sought explanations for the company's associations with "Leading the Future." Although OpenAI leadership has attempted to distance itself from that organization, employees are now using their personal funds to directly counter its agenda.
Guardrails Alliance founders are not concerned about the financial disparity, believing they can leverage public opinion effectively. They argue that politicians opposing the interests of major AI companies face significant opposition from groups like "Leading the Future," and Guardrails Alliance aims to provide crucial support for more responsible AI development.
