OpenAI tests AI applications in physical hardware development

OpenAI has showcased the use of its GPT-6 Astra model in hardware design and automotive simulation projects.

4 November 2026

OpenAI has published internal experiments demonstrating the use of its GPT-6 Astra model to assist in the design of physical products. Company staff utilized the model to automate tasks such as mechanical enclosure design, circuit board layout, and firmware generation, resulting in the creation of a test device prototype in less than a month.

While the project highlights potential time savings, OpenAI acknowledges that AI-generated designs still face significant hurdles. The company noted that models often fail to account for specific production constraints, dimensional tolerances, and complex assembly requirements, necessitating multiple rounds of human review.

Beyond consumer electronics, OpenAI is collaborating with Mazda to apply simulation models to automotive aerodynamics and crash safety. Additionally, the company is working with Chip Ganassi Racing to process 3D scan data into editable CAD models, a process intended to assist teams in reconstructing designs where original manufacturing files are missing.
