OpenAI to consolidate ChatGPT and Codex usage limits starting December

OpenAI will merge usage quotas for ChatGPT and Codex across Plus, Pro, and Business subscription plans beginning in December.

31 October 2026

Starting in December, OpenAI will implement a unified token-based usage system for ChatGPT and Codex. The change affects users on Plus, Pro, and Business plans, as the company integrates intelligent agent capabilities into the core ChatGPT interface.

Usage will be tracked collectively across both platforms, with consumption rates dictated by the specific model selected and the complexity of the task performed. OpenAI stated that instant chat interactions will remain exempt from these quotas.

To manage these changes, users can monitor their remaining capacity and reset schedules through the settings menu. If limits are reached, subscribers have the option to wait for a scheduled reset, upgrade their plan, or purchase additional credits. OpenAI maintains that the transition is designed to minimize workflow disruptions for the majority of its subscriber base.
