OpenAI to Consolidate ChatGPT Desktop Interface Tabs

OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs within its desktop application to simplify user navigation. The change will be rolled out gradually to gather feedback.

3 November 2026

OpenAI plans to overhaul the interface of its ChatGPT desktop application by merging the existing 'Chat' and 'Work' tabs. The company stated the change aims to reduce navigation confusion, allowing users to move from brainstorming to execution within a single unified workspace.

While the main interface will be streamlined to better support file uploads and project management, OpenAI confirmed that Codex will remain a separate, independent feature. The company has initiated a phased rollout to a select group of users before a broader release.

As part of this update, ChatGPT and Codex will share a unified token quota. OpenAI noted that while this shift will not impact most users, those with intensive workflows may experience more frequent quota resets depending on model utilization. This move mirrors recent interface consolidation efforts by competitors, such as Anthropic’s integration of chat and collaboration features in its Claude platform.
