OpenAI to merge ChatGPT Chat and Work tabs

OpenAI is updating its ChatGPT desktop application to merge the currently separate Chat and Work tabs. The company stated that the consolidation aims to provide a more cohesive workspace, allowing users to transition from ideation to project execution while keeping files and plugins accessible in one interface. Codex will remain as a distinct experience within the app.

The update is currently being rolled out to a select group of users for feedback before a wider release. OpenAI confirmed that this transition will also impact account allowances, as both ChatGPT and Codex will now draw from the same token pool.

According to the company, this change is not expected to affect most users, though some high-volume accounts may experience more frequent quota resets. The move follows a similar interface consolidation by rival Anthropic, which integrated its chat and co-work functions into a single screen in September.
