OpenAI unveils new AI agents amid safety concerns over shelved model

OpenAI announced new proactive artificial intelligence agents, dubbed "Dots," at its annual developer conference on Tuesday. Designed to complete ongoing tasks on behalf of users, these agents enter a competitive landscape with Meta's recently launched personal agents.
CEO Sam Altman described the "Dots" agents as "remarkably capable" and "always-on" tools intended to act proactively as assistants for users. The launch represents a significant step for the company in offering more integrated and continuously available AI support.
The announcements follow OpenAI's decision on Monday to pause the rollout of another, more advanced model. The company cited safety concerns raised by its own researchers, reflecting broader industry discussions about the pace of AI development versus the implementation of safety measures.
Altman addressed safety concerns during a Q&A session, stating the company is increasing its investment in AI agent safety, security, and monitoring. OpenAI also unveiled an upgraded model, GPT-6.1 Sol, and a premium speed tier called "Ultrafast."
