OpenAI's Former CTO Launches Distinct AI Model

Mira Murati, formerly the chief technology officer at OpenAI, has launched her new venture's first AI model, named Inkling, through her company Thinking Machines. This model diverges from industry norms by offering both open access to its operational "weights" and significant flexibility for users.

Thinking Machines states its mission with Inkling is "to build AI that extends human will and judgment." Unlike many proprietary AI models where the internal workings are secret, Inkling provides full access to its training weights. This approach allows users to understand and modify the AI's behavior.

The Inkling model incorporates a tool called Tinker, designed to enable users to shape and customize its functionality. This allows for the adjustment of the model's weights to better align with the specific requirements of individual users or businesses. This contrasts with traditional AI models where users must rely on the pre-determined output without modification.

Thinking Machines describes Inkling as a "broad" model trained across various tasks, including reasoning, coding, and vision. The company emphasizes that its adaptability for different workflows makes it suitable for real-world applications, prioritizing customization over narrow optimization for benchmark tests.
