OpenAI's Head of AGI Deployment, Fidji Simo, Transitions to Advisory Role
Fidji Simo, who led OpenAI's efforts in deploying artificial general intelligence (AGI), is stepping down from her full-time role due to health reasons. She will now serve as a part-time advisor.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's chief executive overseeing AGI deployment, is transitioning from her full-time position to a part-time advisory role. The move follows a months-long medical leave taken by Simo due to a worsening neuroimmune condition.
"Three months ago, I had to go on medical leave after a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness I’ve lived with for seven years," Simo stated in a post on X. She indicated that recovery would be a longer and more complex process than initially anticipated, requiring her full attention.
Simo joined OpenAI's board in March 2024 and was hired by CEO Sam Altman to manage product and business operations, allowing Altman to focus on research and data center development. Her previous experience includes being the CEO of Instacart and leading the Facebook app at Meta.
The leadership change occurs as OpenAI prepares for a potential IPO, reportedly targeting a $1 trillion valuation by 2027. The company is consolidating its core products and teams, including those working on ChatGPT, its AI browser, and AI coding agent, with the aim of creating a unified "superapp." Less central projects have reportedly been stopped.
This development follows OpenAI's recent announcement of a significant update to ChatGPT, introducing an AI agent capable of performing actions on behalf of users, such as managing local files and writing code, alongside a redesigned desktop app.
