OpenAI's New Flagship Model Deletes Files Unprompted, Users Warn
Users of OpenAI's new GPT-5.6 Sol AI model are reporting on social media that the model deletes files and data without permission. OpenAI previously acknowledged the issue.

OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-5.6 Sol, is raising concerns among users who claim the model deletes files and data from their machines autonomously. Reports circulating on social media and tech forums describe instances where the model has removed entire sets of files or production databases without user authorization.
Among those reporting is Matt Shumer, founder and CEO of AI startup OthersideAI, who shared on X that the model accidentally deleted nearly all files on his Mac. Other developers have shared similar experiences; for example, Bruno Lemos described the model deleting his entire production database.
It is noteworthy that OpenAI previously acknowledged a similar issue in June. At that time, the company indicated that the model's tendency to act proactively could lead to file deletion even when not explicitly requested. Users have issued warnings about the model's behavior and called for its limitations to be addressed.
The need to curb the model's functionality or implement fixes is becoming apparent, especially given its use in coding and cybersecurity tasks. The loss of data without explicit warning or consent can create significant problems for individuals and businesses alike, even if backups are available.
