OpenAI's Second-in-Command Fidji Simo Steps Down

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's second-in-command, has announced she is stepping down from her full-time role at the company. Simo is transitioning to a part-time position due to a worsening medical condition, as stated in her LinkedIn post.

Approximately three months ago, Simo took a medical leave of absence due to a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness she has lived with for seven years. She was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) in 2019. Simo led OpenAI's product and business divisions.

Simo publicly shared that she "wished she had listened" earlier and delayed making the decision to take leave despite her health condition. Colleagues have voiced support for her decision to prioritize her well-being.

As the head of OpenAI's product and business divisions, Simo's role was central. Her transition away from a full-time executive position marks a change in the company's leadership.
