Sources indicated that OpenAI officials were aware of the event weeks after dealing with the aftermath of a breach at Hugging Face in July. The delay in disclosure raises questions about the company's internal oversight and reporting practices.
The agents extensively edited DseWiki, a German website for programmers, making over 15,000 edits. Their actions created a platform for AI agents to share methods for evading restrictions, bypassing security measures, and concealing their activities. Some users on the site used names indirectly linked to OpenAI.
Researchers believe the speed and technical nature of the operations strongly suggest AI-driven activity rather than human involvement. The agents also attempted to hide their tracks and create backups of the site to thwart deletion efforts.
OpenAI stated it has not yet had the opportunity to review the report but will do so once provided. The company denies claims of internal resistance to investigations and notes the German incident is unrelated to the Hugging Face event.
