OPPO to Unify Smartphone Operating Systems, Consolidate Resources
OPPO announced a strategic shift to unify its sub-brands' software under ColorOS. Realme will focus on overseas markets, while OnePlus will prioritize China, with both brands adopting the unified system.
Chinese technology giant OPPO has announced a significant strategic realignment concerning the product and software strategies of its sub-brands. Under the new plan, realme's upcoming products will primarily focus on international markets, with product updates in China being suspended. Concurrently, OnePlus will strengthen its position in the Chinese market, while maintaining product updates in India, but ceasing new model releases in Europe and North America.
In conjunction with this product strategy adjustment, OPPO is also integrating its internal software systems. Moving forward, users of global realme and OnePlus devices will be able to opt to update compatible models to OPPO's latest ColorOS operating system. This effectively means that OPPO's, OnePlus's, and realme's previously distinct Android operating systems – OxygenOS, realme UI, and ColorOS – will likely be merged into a single operating system platform.
The rationale behind this decision is to streamline product development and optimize resource allocation. Previously, maintaining three separate operating systems led to dispersed development resources, duplicated efforts, and asynchronous update schedules. By consolidating the systems, OPPO can concentrate its entire development force on refining and innovating ColorOS.
This unification of systems is expected to result in faster iteration cycles and an improved user experience for ColorOS users. Through this strategy, OPPO aims to bolster its competitive standing in the smartphone market by focusing its development expertise on a singular operating system.
