Oracle announces new layoffs to offset AI spending

Database giant Oracle has launched a new round of layoffs as the company aims to offset substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Affected employees were notified via email early this morning. This move comes as Oracle anticipates capital expenditures between $90 billion and $95 billion for AI-related initiatives this year.
The company's strategy involves balancing high AI costs, which have necessitated significant borrowing. According to CNBC, Oracle has accumulated $125 billion in debt to fund its expansion, carrying a lower credit rating than its hyperscaler competitors. By the end of the fiscal year on May 31, Oracle's global headcount had decreased by approximately 21,000 employees, representing a 13% reduction.
These recent cuts reflect the broader impact of AI on the technology sector's labor market. While AI has the potential to replace human roles, it is also prompting companies to free up capital for new technological advancements by reducing payroll expenses. Peer software companies like Atlassian and Autodesk have previously announced similar workforce reductions to justify investments in AI and other developmental areas.
Employees are increasingly aware of the trade-offs between corporate workforces and AI investments. A former Oracle engineer commented on LinkedIn that "the battle to build AI centers has lots of casualties," referring to the latest layoffs.
