Orbis International Receives AWS Grant for Eye Condition Screening

Global eye care organization Orbis International has been selected as a winner of the 2026 AWS Children's Health Innovation Award. The grant recognizes projects that leverage advanced cloud services to improve children's health outcomes. Orbis will utilize the award to integrate AI-assisted screening for retinopathy of prematurity, a leading cause of blindness in infants.

The funding will enable Orbis to expand its efforts in Asia, specifically in India and Vietnam, building on previous work in Mongolia and Bangladesh. The initiative aims to provide neonatal teams with faster and more accurate tools for screening premature infants for this condition. The AI-assisted system will help identify at-risk babies earlier, facilitating timely follow-up care to prevent blindness.

AWS's support, including cloud computing credits and technical expertise, will bolster Orbis's digital infrastructure. This will aid in processing retinal images, supporting clinical decision-making, and prioritizing urgent cases. By extending AI-powered screening, Orbis seeks to make specialized eye care more accessible, particularly for families in remote areas.

Orbis will integrate AI technology developed by Siloam Vision into its Cybersight telemedicine and e-learning platform. The award highlights AWS's commitment to advancing children's health through technology and supporting nonprofit organizations in addressing critical societal challenges.
