Orcas Observed Teaming Up to Shatter Sunfish

Orcas in the Gulf of California have been filmed working together to ram sunfish with such intensity that the prey's carcasses explode into fragments. The observed behavior, detailed in a new paper in Frontiers in Ethology, is distinct from typical predation methods.

Researchers suggest that this coordinated ramming might serve multiple purposes. One theory is that it could aid younger orcas in feeding more easily, or it may be a form of play or social interaction within the pod. Orcas are known for their complex cooperative hunting strategies, which can involve sophisticated techniques to capture and consume prey.

Previous observations have documented orcas using cooperative tactics, such as holding a prey animal steady while others attack, or herding other marine life. This new behavior, however, highlights a different level of targeted force and fragmentation of prey that merits further investigation into its function and evolutionary significance.

The findings contribute to the ongoing study of orca intelligence and social learning, suggesting that these marine mammals may develop and refine unique hunting techniques through intergenerational knowledge transfer and collaborative practice.
