Osteopaths Seek Legal Recognition for Professional Title in Germany
Members of the German Parliament are supporting efforts to establish official regulation for osteopaths' professional title. The aim is to enhance patient safety and the profession's quality.

Federal Parliament members Reiner Meier and Dr. Hans-Peter Friedrich have expressed support for the Bundesverband Osteopathie (BVO) in its pursuit of legal regulation for the professional title of osteopath in Germany. Discussions were held at the BVO's headquarters, where Chairman Georg Schöner and Office Manager Christine Berek met with the politicians.
The meeting focused on advancing the recognition of osteopathy as a healthcare profession and addressing the current legal uncertainty faced by many practicing osteopaths. Ensuring patient safety was also highlighted as a key consideration for future regulations.
The BVO's primary objective is to achieve quality assurance and legal clarity for osteopathy while simultaneously improving patient safety. A follow-up meeting in Berlin with additional politicians and responsible figures has been arranged.
Friedrich, who is also a member of the German Bundestag's Health Committee, proposed the meeting following a BVO visit to Berlin in July. The initiative aims to lay the groundwork for formally establishing osteopathy within Germany's healthcare system.
