Outokumpu and Alfa Laval Partner on Low-Emission Stainless Steel
Outokumpu Oyj will supply its new Circle Green stainless steel to Alfa Laval for use in European production facilities. The collaboration aims to reduce carbon footprints.
Steel company Outokumpu Oyj and technology solutions provider Alfa Laval have signed an agreement for the supply of Outokumpu's Circle Green low-carbon stainless steel.
The contract will see Alfa Laval begin using Outokumpu's Circle Green steel across its main European production units. This is a significant shift, as Alfa Laval's heat exchangers can comprise up to 80 percent stainless steel. These heat exchangers are integral to the energy transition, supporting applications such as energy efficiency and heat pumps.
Outokumpu is supplying Circle Green in Supra® and Core® stainless steel grades. The company states that Circle Green offers a carbon footprint up to 93 percent lower than the industry average. This reduction is achieved through the use of 100 percent low-carbon electricity, recycled steel, and reinvented production processes.
"Circle Green is our spearhead climate solution, and we are extremely pleased that our long-time customer Alfa Laval is now switching to it," said Thomas Anstots, President of Outokumpu's business line Advanced Materials. He added that if all stainless steel globally were produced using similar methods, it would reduce annual global carbon emissions by 364 million tons.
Circle Green steel will be delivered from Outokumpu's mills in Dillenburg, Germany, and Tornio, Finland.
