Outokumpu enters metal powder business for additive manufacturing, plant starts April 2023
Steel company Outokumpu Oyj will begin producing metal powders for additive manufacturing in Germany in April 2023. The new plant in Krefeld utilizes local steel scrap.
Outokumpu Oyj is launching a new business line by commencing metal powder production for additive manufacturing at its Krefeld mill in Germany, starting April 2023. The move diversifies the company's offerings and leverages its expertise in sustainable steel production.
The new facility will produce metal powders intended for demanding applications using technologies such as additive manufacturing (AM), metal injection molding (MIM), and binder jetting. Outokumpu plans to use locally sourced steel scrap as raw material, aligning with its circular economy strategy and aiming to increase the recycled content in its products.
Initial production capacity is estimated at 330 tons annually, with potential for future expansion and development of new material grades. The company highlights its high recycling rate for stainless steel, which reached 94% in 2022, as a foundation for this new venture.
Outokumpu aims to reduce transportation emissions by consolidating production processes and is partnering with SMS group as the technology supplier for the atomization plant.
