Outokumpu Explains Post-Fabrication Treatments for Stainless Steel
Stainless steel producer Outokumpu Oyj has detailed post-fabrication treatments essential for ensuring corrosion resistance and surface quality in its products.

Helsinki – Outokumpu Oyj, a producer of stainless steel, has provided detailed information regarding treatments applied after the fabrication of stainless steel components. These processes are crucial for ensuring specific surface finishes, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance.
Post-fabrication treatments are often necessary for several reasons, driven by the demands of the process environment or the final application. These can include achieving a particular surface appearance, minimizing residual stresses, or meeting specific mechanical property requirements. For instance, welds often require pickling and removal of weld spatter to restore corrosion resistance. In applications subjected to high fatigue loads, annealing may be performed to relieve residual stresses.
Outokumpu highlights that many common corrosion problems can be traced to inadequate cleaning after fabrication. Surface imperfections introduced during manufacturing can disrupt the self-healing passive film of stainless steel, reducing its resistance to localized corrosion. Consequently, a final cleaning process is frequently required to restore an acceptable surface quality for both hygienic and corrosion-related purposes.
Treatment methods such as mechanical grinding, sandblasting, and acid pickling are employed to remove contaminants and defects. Acid pickling, typically using a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids, provides the most corrosion-resistant surface by removing oxide scale and the underlying chromium-depleted layer. This process requires careful handling and proper disposal due to the hazardous nature of the acids.
Additional methods include passivation, which can enhance corrosion resistance and is particularly effective if pickling has not been performed. The company emphasizes that correct post-fabrication treatment is critical for ensuring the long-term performance and durability of stainless steel in various environments.
